Radiation-Induced Tumefactive Cyst (RITC)
- RITC is a delayed complication of radiosurgery with an incidence between 0.2-0.5 % at the first 3 years after treatment. Its occurrence is likely related to the volume of brain tissue treated.
- The pathogenesis is not well understood. Its clinical presentation is nonspecific. Most often it is detected as an incidental finding. Headaches have been reported.
- Key Diagnostic Features: Cystic appearing lesion with signal intensity characteristics slightly hyperintense than CSF is seen. Surrounding edema is often seen. Nodular enhancement has also been commonly described.
- DDx: Glioblastoma, tumefactive demyelinating lesion, infection, radiation necrosis
- Rx: If symptomatic, cystoperitoneal shunt
